e-PAN PDF Digital Signature and Green Tick: What to Verify
Find out which signature an e-PAN warning refers to and choose the right check before changing or printing the file.An e-PAN signature warning needs the right check
An e-PAN PDF showing a question mark needs its embedded digital signature checked. That task is different from checking whether your PAN is active or changing the handwritten signature shown on a card. Start by identifying the message you see and whether the file is the original download, a scan, or a copy made by a PDF editor.
GreenTick PDF verifies supported signed originals before producing a flattened print-ready copy. It does not retrieve an e-PAN from a PAN number, change PAN records, or guarantee compatibility with every issuer's PDF. A scan or screenshot with a visible signature picture cannot substitute for an original containing a supported digital signature.
Separate the issuer's signature from your signature
The Income Tax Department describes Instant e-PAN as a digitally signed electronic PAN. A certificate-based PDF signature provides evidence about the signed content and its signer. A handwritten signature image is visual information on a document. Adobe's signature-type guidance similarly distinguishes drawn or image signatures from certificate-based digital signatures.
If someone asks you to correct the holder's signature, ask which official application or correction process they require. If they ask for PDF signature validation, work with the signed file instead. Adding your signature picture or a green tick in an editor answers neither an issuer-certificate warning nor a PAN-record mismatch.
Download a fresh original from the correct source
Use the issuing service that applies to your PAN. The Income Tax portal has an Instant e-PAN download route for that service. Protean's e-PAN download page states that its facility covers holders whose latest application was processed through Protean. Follow the selected site's authentication and eligibility instructions rather than assuming one download form serves every PAN.
Save that download directly and keep an untouched copy. Avoid sending it through compression, conversion, merging, or a password-removal website before validation. If the document needs a password, use the issuer's instructions. Do not assume the e-Aadhaar name-and-birth-year password applies to an e-PAN from a different issuing process.
Read the actual PDF validation result
In a signature-aware viewer, inspect the signature entry rather than judging the page artwork. Adobe documents opening the Signatures panel, validating the signature, and inspecting Signature Properties and the signer's certificate. An unknown signer does not by itself prove the file was altered. Trust warnings, changed-content failures and unsupported files need different next steps.
When asking for help, describe the error and the original download source without posting your PAN or the whole document publicly. If the original cannot be verified by GreenTick PDF, follow the result shown or use the issuer's guidance. A failed or unsupported check is not a reason to manually draw a validation badge.
Use PAN status verification for database questions
For a name, date-of-birth or active-status question, use the Income Tax Department's Verify Your PAN service. Its stated purpose is to compare PAN details with the database and check active status. A PDF signature check does not perform that database task, even when the PDF contains a correctly signed PAN document.
For example, a recipient may ask both for your e-PAN attachment and confirmation that the PAN is active. Treat these as two requests. Keep the official status result and the document separately, and ask the recipient which evidence it accepts. A green mark on a print copy should not be presented as proof of a live PAN database enquiry.
Keep the digital original and print copy separately
After successful verification of a supported original, GreenTick PDF's output is a flattened print-ready copy with visible validation information. It is useful for the print-copy purpose described by the service. It is not the issuer's original file with its live embedded digital signature preserved, and it does not promise an Adobe validation status for the output.
Give the receiving organisation the file type it requests. If it needs to examine the issuer's embedded signature, provide the untouched original through its accepted channel. If it asks for a printable copy, inspect the downloaded output and print preview. Store both with clear names so a later upload does not accidentally use the wrong version.
Choose the next action from the problem
For a PDF warning, begin with the original and the signature details. For a missing or outdated e-PAN, return to the relevant issuing service. For a wrong name or holder-signature image, use the applicable correction process. For an active-status question, use official PAN verification. This separation avoids paying for an unrelated document task.
Before submitting anything, confirm that the recipient wants the latest document and check the visible details yourself. Successful PDF verification does not correct those details or decide institutional acceptance. Keep the original available if the recipient later requests a certificate check, and share sensitive files only with the intended receiving organisation.
