How to Find Your Car's Chassis Number and Engine Number

Find car chassis and engine identifiers using your documents, the correct owner's manual and authorised workshop help; compare numbers before entering them.

First identify which number the form wants

The registration number is the identifier on your vehicle's registration plate. A chassis or vehicle identification number and an engine serial number are separate identifiers. A website or insurer can ask for one of these, a complete value or a specified portion. Read the field label and instructions before looking for a number so you do not solve the wrong problem.

Do not substitute a policy reference or an application acknowledgement because it has a similar length. Keep a separate note with each label and its source while you work. For vehicles with unfamiliar formats, use the manufacturer's information for that model. A rule about a particular car's identifier length should not be treated as a universal rule for every vehicle, age or manufacturer.

Search dependable documents before opening the bonnet

Begin with your own RC and purchase paperwork. Maruti Suzuki's identification guidance, for example, points owners to the vehicle identification plate and invoice or registration documents for the chassis identifier. Use that as a practical example, then confirm what your own manufacturer's paperwork calls the field. An old photograph may help, but check whether the full line is readable.

Your insurance schedule or service records can be worth checking too, where they contain vehicle identifiers. Compare the car's registration and description before copying from a folder containing several vehicles. If a downloaded report masks part of a number, do not reconstruct the missing characters. Obtain a full accepted source or use the assistance available through the service requesting the information.

Use the exact model's vehicle-identification section

Find the owner's manual on the manufacturer's official website and select the appropriate model and version. Look for a section called vehicle identification or a similar term. Its diagrams are more useful than generic lists of possible locations. Depending on the design, an identification plate, label or stamped marking can be in a different location from one car to another.

For example, Maruti's Eeco manual describes the engine serial number on the cylinder block and separately discusses chassis identification. That example does not identify the location on every Maruti model or every other manufacturer's vehicle. Follow the diagram for your car. If the manual lists several identifiers, keep the engine label separate from the chassis or VIN label.

Read the marking carefully and safely

Park securely and let the engine cool before inspecting an accessible area. Use a light and an appropriate photo if the marking is difficult to read. Do not reach into moving parts, remove components or crawl beneath an unsupported vehicle to obtain a number. An authorised workshop can locate a difficult marking and explain which identifier it represents.

Record the characters as shown and compare more than one clear view where possible. Similar-looking letters and digits can lead to a failed lookup. Do not scrape, alter or restamp a marking to make it look clearer. If corrosion, damage or an inaccessible position prevents a reliable reading, ask the workshop for guidance and the accepted next step rather than guessing.

What to do when the numbers disagree

Compare the physical identifier with the correctly labelled field in your dependable document. If there is a difference, first rule out a copying error, wrong document or masked display. Preserve the original documents and an accurate private note of what you observed. A mismatch deserves a specific explanation from the relevant source; it is not a reason to overwrite a PDF.

If repair or replacement work may be relevant, obtain the actual workshop paperwork and ask how the recorded identifier should be checked. For an error in the registration record, seek guidance from the registering authority. A private lookup service cannot resolve the underlying issue or certify that a vehicle modification has been accepted. Keep the evidence separate from your interpretation.

Enter the requested portion and protect the full number

When you have the reliable identifier, return to the selected service and follow its current instructions. If it requests a specified suffix, use that portion rather than applying the same convention everywhere. Let the owner manage their account authentication and verification messages when you are helping someone else. Retain only the information needed for the agreed task.

GreenTick PDF's current RC and Complete Vehicle Details requests use the registration number with authorisation confirmation; they do not require chassis input on those forms. Returned identification fields depend on the provider record and may be unavailable or masked. Choose a report for convenient comparison, and use the manufacturer's guidance or an accepted source when you need to confirm the actual car's identifiers.

Questions

Is my car's engine number the same as its chassis number?

No. They identify different things. Read the label and consult the model-specific manual before entering either value.

Where exactly is my car's chassis number?

The location depends on the manufacturer and model. Use your own vehicle documents and the correct official manual, or ask an authorised workshop.

Can I recover the full number from a masked vehicle report?

Do not guess masked characters. Use a reliable complete document or the appropriate authorised assistance.
